traditional art for the modern world
Goju Ryu Kyokai is an association founded by practitioners of authentic Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate-do. We preserve the practice of traditional kata, bunkai and unique training methods passed down from our predecessors. We also develop new applications and training drills based on the traditional methods, for use in modern day situations. As society evolves, so must our fighting art.
“Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the wise; seek what they sought.”
― Matsuo Bashō
Goju Ryu is a non-sport discipline practised for real self defence situations, health, longevity and self-discovery. It is a complete self defence system using grappling, punching, kicking, knee & elbow strikes, and open-handed techniques. Emphasis is on close-combat defence, delivering quick response finishing techniques via strikes, manipulation of joints and vital points, strangulation, throwing techniques and ground fighting. The system teaches many important foundations such as generating power, grounding, tension/relaxation, correct breathing techniques, body conditioning, body evasion and more.

The Tiger/Crane emblem

The Goju Ryu Kyokai logo is unique to the association.
The white crane and black tiger design represents balance i.e. hard and soft, or yin and yang.
Chinese Kung Fu styles of Crane and Tiger particularly influenced Okinawan te practitioners and can be traced back through the Shaolin temple.
